Mr. Miller, age 86, of Palm Bay, Florida passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023.
Thomas Iva Miller passed away in his sleep on March 09, 2023. He was a strong, kind, soft spoken man and beloved father. He believed in doing things in a slow and steady manner. Tom grew up in Union, the oldest son of Rubin and Catherine Miller with younger brother Joe. He attended the local Union schools and played in the High School Band. He earned spending money shining shoes at his father's barbershop. Tom realized at an early age what he wanted to do. He said he knew at the age of 10 that he wanted to be a doctor. He excelled in his studies throughout his school years and was able to leave high school early to attend college. He was one of the youngest graduates of the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, Mississippi. He met the love of his life, Renee, while attending Medical School. She was running the central supply for the medical school hospital. They married in Dec of 1957 and found themselves heading West after Tom's medical school graduation to work for the US Public Health as a Surgeon. After doing work in Seattle, Washington, Memphis, Tennessee and Jackson, Mississippi, they returned to Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1966. Tom did his internship and residence in Neurosurgery and became a practicing Neurosurgeon.
He pioneered new surgical techniques and procedures in Neurosurgery throughout his 30+ years as a physician serving those in need. He and Renee raised three children and provided them with their support and love to allow them to find their own unique callings in life. In retirement, he and Renee split time between the family farm in Mississippi and Melbourne, Florida. Tom enjoyed working on old cars, photography, genealogy, golf, and fishing. Tom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Renee, his brother Joseph Miller, his three children, Lucretia Rodriguez -Sawao, Marvia Avant, and Thomas Iva Miller, Jr and his two grandchildren, Jeremiah Gerena and Dr. Sarah Gambone.
