UNION:

Elizabeth “Liz” Hamm Butts of Union, MS died peacefully in her home on August 29, 2026, at age 91, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her sister Hazel Yvonne Hamm (known as Jane), brothers John David Hamm (wife Betty) and Jerry Hamm (wife Linda), 8 nieces and 1 nephew from her siblings and many nieces and nephews on her husband Dub’s side of the family. Her transition to be with our Lord was preceded by her husband of 69 years, W.F. “Dub” Butts in 2021, brother Earnest Hamm in 2020, brother Dudley Hamm in 2025, and young brother Doyle Hamm, in 1950.

Services for Liz will be held on Tuesday, September 1 at 2 pm at Milling Funeral Home in Union, MS. with burial next to her beloved husband Dub following at County Line Cemetery. Bro. Troy Dew will officiate.

Visitation will be held 1:15 pm - 2 pm, Tuesday, September 1 at Milling Funeral Home of Union.

Liz was born at home in Lake, MS on June 3, 1935, to John Otto Hamm and Ruby Dee Wheeler Hamm. She attended Lake School and Good Hope School, and married Dub at their preacher’s house in 1952 with her sister Hazel Yvonne and father John as their witnesses. Together they lived their married life in the Union area. Liz retired in 2016 at age 81, after 43 years at Laird Hospital in Union. At Laird she held various positions, including lab assistant, x-ray technician, and respiratory assistant and became a phlebotomist when the new hospital was built in 1988. Prior to her hospital work, Liz worked many years at the Decatur Shirt Company in Decatur, MS.

Family and friends admired Liz for the joy and satisfaction she got from the simpler things life has to offer. She loved gardening, working with flowers, cooking and baking, crocheting and working on crafts. At any given time her closets were stocked with materials for her next project. Liz also took great pride in her personal appearance and the appearance of their home. She enjoyed pretty clothes and regular visits to the hairdresser to have her hair done.

Family members tell the story of the time Liz broke her leg but wouldn’t go to the hospital until she was “washed up and put on good clothes.”

Liz and Dub enjoyed their time together, never feeling the desire for travel. The one exception was when they traveled to the coast to see the Gulf of Mexico. When Liz was asked what her favorite years were, she would reply that they were the 15 years Dub was preaching at their church. They truly loved the Lord and all that He provided them.

During Liz’s prolonged illness she was cared for by hospital staff, Hospice workers, and at home by loving caregivers, especially Gladys Beeman and Kim Russell, who treated Liz like she was their mother. The family would like to thank them in this obituary for the loving care they provided Liz while she was at home, and to let them know that they are family in our eyes. May God bless them the way they blessed Liz.
